Simple Things

Living in simplicity is … well, a simple thing, according to some organizers, and relatively painless as well. After all, it’s just a matter of voluntary downscaling.

But if you were to ask New Yorkers about how painless it is to downsize, you would hear a different story. Unfortunately, not everyone thinks the path to simplicity is an easy one. We sometimes don’t know where to find order again.

In today’s blog, I would like to share four simple things that we sometimes take for granted but can actually help us offload the burden on our shoulders. Simple things in life matter and will help you live that organized life effortlessly. Of course, there are a thousand simple things one can follow, but I am only going to share four ….. lest you say, ‘nah, that’s a lot to do’. Simplicity is so simple that many find it hard to define. But it’s what it is, nothing less, nothing more. And to be honest, our spirits long for that elusive blessing. The blessing that comes with simplicity. I always say, simplicity is an attitude. We each have to decide that ‘this is what I will do’….. and we are held responsible for the location of our desires.

Simple thing No.1

Listen up …. this first simple thing I am sharing is as simple as setting out your workout gear the night before. It’s simple, but if you forget to do it you waste time looking for everything in the morning and you either risk running late for your workout, or running back to bed. I don’t know about you, but I feel more motivated to get up in the morning and go to the gym knowing that my workout gear is set. I hate the feeling of waking up and start searching for my most comfortable sneakers, or have to buy a bottle of water at the gym or use the water fountain because I forgot my water bottle. And besides, all you want to do in the morning is get dressed and get going. Too early for doing a treasure hunt. Being organized pays off, in a lot of ways.

Simple thing No.2

Make your bed every morning!!! This is what we learn as kids. But you would be surprised that there are some adults who are lazy or simply don’t know how to make a bed. Or just don’t see the need to. Oh well, be reminded that little projects like that train you for bigger projects. You rush out of that door to go and make it big out there when you have failed to perform one small task at home…. come on!!! Admiral William McRaven could not have said it better … “If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. If, by chance, you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that’s made. That you made. And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”

There you have it, now do it!!!

Simple thing No.3

If you are looking for a change in your closet, let me introduce you to one of my favorite things ….. huggable hangers. This item will take your Closet from ‘bleh’ to ‘WOW’.

I love an organized closet. I can spend hours just staring at a well organized closet. It’s more like an obsession. Thou shalt not judge me.

Anyway, who would have known that a simple thing like using these huggable hangers could work out the magic. My clients are left in awe every time I organize their closets and use this secret weapon. It may be simple, but this simple item has taken me places I never thought I would reach. And this simple item has made people smile.

Simple thing No.4

How would you rate your skills in terms of preparedness? Are you the type that would stress over a friend/relative coming over for a sleepover? Have you ever gone to someone’s place and you can clearly see ‘stress’ written on their foreheads? Or maybe you have found yourself in that similar position of stressing because you can’t find any extra or clean sheets anywhere in the house?

Certain individuals have the gift of preparedness. They may put aside enough clean towels and clean sheets for guests. It’s always nice to have a guest basket ready for guests – expected or unexpected. Saves you a lot of stress as well as unnecessary last minute laundry.

My mother taught me to always keep a guest basket in the house. It has proven to work just perfect. I get to enjoy my guests instead of running up and down looking for towels. Simple you call it, but once you master the art of preparedness, you will wish you worked on it earlier in life.

All in all, simple things matter. If you think about the things causing you stress, you will realize that it is the very simple things we all take for granted. There is a better way. In fact, it’s so simple we may miss it. Practice an attitude of simplicity…. it’s a matter of the heart. Be intentional about it. The blessing of simplicity is organizing our lives so we can experience the fullness of life in every corner.

Cheers from my Corner to yours!!
